Hoof hygiene

Prevention and control of infectious lameness

Lameness is one of the main causes of loss of milk production, coming second in importance only to mastitis and causing considerable economic damage for the dairy farmer in costs due to milk production loss, lower-reproductive performance, veterinary fees and the costs of medical therapy.

An accurate prophylaxis reduces the onset of infectious hoof diseases, the most frequent of which are digital dermatitis, inter-digital dermatitis and phlegmon. For a complete protocol for prevention, the following measures should be carried out:

  • Carry out regular hoof-trimming (at least once per lactation)
  • Ensure early diagnosis and adequate treatment of the lesions
  • Maintain a dry housing environment
  • Pay attention to hygiene in the resting areas, the cubicles and the aisles/crossovers
  • Keep legs and hooves clean
  • Avoid overcrowding
  • Ensure well-balanced nutrition
  • Carry out regular foot-baths
